Goshen College Plays National Anthem

by Hans Miller

In the game of Goshen College and Bethel everything felt different. Goshen College has never played the National Anthem. Since the first sport that Goshen College had, they never played it. From January 22, 2010, Goshen College started to play the National Anthem for softball and baseball games. Later in the spring the National Anthem sprung into all the other sports that Goshen College had.
When the buzzer yelled a loud voice said, “Please rise for the National Anthem.” Everyone was silent and the music started to play. Almost everyone was looking up at the red, blue, and white flag. But almost no Goshen fan put their hand on their heart. Goshen College’s fans were not used to the National Anthem playing at Goshen College’s games. On Goshen College’s actual basketball team only one person put his hand on his heart. Number 33, Seth Kaufman, put his hand on his heart while it played.
There are two reasons why Goshen College plays the National Anthem now. The first reason is that two Goshen College Presidents, Dr. Kathy Meyer Reimer and Dr. Joe Liechty decided that they want to play it because it honors traditions. The second reason is that they want to hold and play in conference games. Division two, the NAIA, made the rule that you have to play the National Anthem to play in conference games.
The presidents of Goshen College feel that it’s right to play it. Dr. Joe Liechty quotes, “This is the right thing to do and we will keep it for a while.”
