After a leading by the small margin of 35-34 in the first half, Bethel College's 19-2 second half run gave them the win over rival Goshen College in a full Gunden Gymnasium. This win came on Tuesday night with the Pilots winning by a final score of 70-54.
During the decisive run it seemed like every shot attempted by Goshen College had no chance of falling and like Bethel College just couldn’t miss and every shot they took found the bottom of the net. This 19-2 run was made possible by Bethel just plain outdoing Goshen in pretty category including rebounding, defense, shooting and many other things.
Similar to how the run gave them confidence during the game this win, being their fist in the conference, could give them confidence in competing better and possibly winning more games in their conference.
Neither Goshen College or Bethel College had a win in the MCC (Mid Central Conference) prior to this game. So whoever lost this game would be winless and last place. Bethel’s win allowed them to pass Goshen College putting the Maple Leafs in last place, and the Pilots in second to last place.
“The run to start the second half was huge,” said Bethel coach Mike Lightfoot, ”We talked about some key things at halftime and this was one of the first times all season the players stayed with the focus. It’s a sign we are growing up a little bit.” Clearly Lightfoot was happy with the way his team played, unlike Goshen College coach Gary Chupp who said, “they punched us in the face and we took it.”
