Butler Wins for Tie at #1
“I have to give Butler all the credit tonight. They came ready to play and whooped our butt,” said Cleveland State coach Gary Waters, referring to Butler’s domination over the Vikings on the basketball court last Friday.
Friday’s game held a big prize for the winner: Cleveland St. winning and standing alone at #1, or Butler winning and tying Cleveland for 1st. Until Butler recently lost to Milwaukee, Cleveland St. has been the only team to beat them in their conference, forming a rivalry between the two teams.
The game started off with Butler leading by 10 in the first three minutes of the game. As the game progressed, the Vikings began to come back slightly because of Norris Cole’s shots from downtown. The crowd became hysterical as they knew this would be a good game.
Matt Howard was 8 for 10 on free throws and 1 for 2 on three-pointers, adding up to a grand total of 17 points for the night, his average. There were two things that surprised me about the game though: Shelvin Mack only scored six points, whereas his average for the season is 14.4. His lack of points were made up by an unlikely 6’ 11” Sophomore named Andrew Smith who led the team with 22 points.
Butler obviously had the home-court advantage with 7071 crazy, screaming fans filling up Hinkle Fieldhouse to its brim.
Norris Cole led the Vikings with 26 points for the game, and closed the gap between Cleveland and Butler.
With 11:30 left in the game, and Butler only winning by 17, the Bulldogs put on their game faces and stopped Cleveland from scoring for 3 and-a-half straight minutes. As Cleveland St. began to foul more, Matt Howard repeatedly stepped up to the line and clinched the win for Butler; 79-56, tying them with the Vikings for the 1st place seed in the Horizon League.
“I thought we did a really nice job of defending as a team and attacking as a team,” said Butler coach Brad Stevens after Butler’s win on Friday night. “You have to handle their initial wave in order to attack them appropriately, and I thought our guards did a great job of that and our bigs did a great job of finishing.”
Butler Game
Andrew Smith snags the ball from Cleveland and scores 22 points! Who were the first five people to start off the game on Butler Bull dogs? I’m glad you asked, the five were Matt Howard, Andrew Smith, Shelvin Mack, Shawn Vanzant and Ronald Nored! Matt Howard scored 2-point-lay up! Andrew Smith makes a free throw and swishes it! Butler got ahead by a 13-0 in the first half! Norris Cole had 10 rebounds in the whole entire game. Matt Howard helped the bull dogs by scoring a total of 17 points to win the game. They are very competitve and aggressive. At first Butler was getting their butts kicked! But then Butler came back and beat Cleveland St. majorly. Also Cleveland was 15-1 while Butler had 4-0 but when they lost their game against Milwakee it ended up with 4-1!
Bulldogs Turn It Around
After a tough loss at Milwaukee, The Bulldogs turned things around on Friday night against Cleveland State by dominating on defense, holding the Vikings to 56 points and 34% field goal shooting. After the game, Cleveland State’s coach, Gary Waters, said “I have to give Butler all the credit tonight. They came ready to play and they whooped out butt. They took it to us from the start, and got us out of our flow on offense and defense.”
Hinkle Fieldhouse was almost sold out and the crowd was roaring. Butler played stifling defense, holding the Vikings to 7 points over the first 10 minutes of the game. The turning point was when Cleveland State was called for an intentional foul as Matt Howard drove for a layup on a fast break. From that point on Butler dominated. The Vikings kept chucking up threes which greatly helped Butler’s cause. On the other hand, the threes kept falling for the Bulldogs in the first half. They finished the half 5-9 from beyond the arc.
If it wasn’t for Norris Cole, Cleveland State’s star guard, Butler’s margin of victory would have been even bigger. He scored 46% of his teams points. Cole finished with a double-double. 26 points and 10 boards. He was 8-17 from the field. 3 of his 8 field goals were from beyond the arc.
Butler’s star for the game was Andrew Smith. He too had a double-double. Chipping in 22 points towards Butler’s cause. Another stat that stands out was his 5 offensive rebounds. After the game, Andrew Smith said, “(Cleveland State’s) bigs helped off a lot and our guards did a really good job of penetrating, and they got me the ball a lot. I was able to get some offensive rebounds and make some shots.”
This 76-59 victory was very important to Butler. It was a huge momentum builder. They recovered from a devastating loss to an average Milwaukee team, and they ran one of they biggest conference rivals out of the gym. Brad Stevens said’ “I thought we did a really nice job of defending as a team and attacking as a team. You have to handle their initial wave in order to attack them approiatley, and i thought our guards did a great job of that and our bigs did a great job of finishing.”
Screaming, Crazy Fans
The Hinkle Fieldhouse is packed, the crowd goes crazy every time butler makes a shot. It’s crazy! Everyone here is a hardcore fan for either Cleveland State or Butler.
On Friday, the 7th of January, a showdown took place with two very good teams. They have both done very good this season but Cleveland State had a bad night and didn’t shoot well, and Butler shot with ease. Butler, with a season record of 11-5 and 3-1 in the Horizon league, had a streak of points including two dunks to start off the first half. Cleveland State’s coach, Gary Waters, got very angry at the team and called a time out right away. Cleveland State stepped their game up and played a little better, but the ball was still refusing to go into the basket for them. The ending score of the game was 79-56.
There were some pretty exciting shots at the game. There were a couple of dunks that were pretty awesome, and lot of three point attempts but not all of them succeeded. The trick plays that Butler did were cool to.
Cleveland State is a decent team too, with a record of 11-1 and 4-2 in the conference. In regular season they are doing better then Butler, but not in conference matches. They have been playing pretty well this season, but on Saturday, they just could not pull it together. They had trouble with defense in the first half; But in the second half they did better. During the whole game they had a difficultly with shooting the ball. They just could not shoot well at all.
Over all, it was a great game with lots of screaming fans. It gave the whole basketball center a thrill of excitement. It was tough competition but Butler came out in the end with an amazing double-digit win!
Away With Predictions
On a brisk January night, Cleveland State Vikings traveled to the Butler Bulldog’s Hinkle Fieldhouse to play in what was predicted to be a close game. With Butler and Cleveland ranked side-by-side in their conference, the hype unfortunately climaxed before the game had even begun.
Norris Cole was the only Cleveland player that kept things interesting with his 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists, but who wouldn’t expect it from such a fierce player? Andrew Smith of Butler led the team, challenging Cole with just four fewer points, and an equal number of rebounds and assists, two career highs for the 6’11” sophomore.
With Cleveland State being ranked first in the conference, it led many to believe that the Vikings could end up on top. Butler, however, kept everyone guessing, being a close second. Over 7,000 spectators gathered in a sweltering gym to see how the game would pan out.
The game started with its predicted intensity level. Butler pulled ahead with a variety of different shots, many of which were made by Andrew Smith and Matt Howard. The Vikings were having a lot of trouble controlling the ball, and turned it over 8 times in the first 10 minutes. Most of the widely spaced shots taken in that time flew anywhere but into the basket. Just 2 jumpers and one 3-pointer was made by CSU in that time, with the Bulldogs getting a nice head start.
By the end of the first half, Cleveland’s Norris Cole finally started performing, making several shots, but it wasn’t enough to catch Butler’s double-digit lead. Matt Howard, Chase Stigall, and Ronald Nored all swished the ball more than once, leaving the score at 42-23, with the Bulldogs preponderating the game.
The second half was essentially depressing for everyone geared up in green, white, and black. Cleveland starting shooting and making more baskets, but it still wasn’t enough to pull them back into safe territory. Butler fans relaxed as Andrew Smith put the ball through the hoop repeatedly. The Bulldog’s score shot up, while their opponent’s side of the scoreboard slowly inched higher, to the agony of all the Viking’s fans. The game ended with Butler winning by 23 points, leaving Andrew Smith with a career high for points and rebounds. “I have to give Butler all the credit tonight,” says Cleveland’s coach, “They came ready to play and whooped our butt.”
Stunning Victory for Bulldogs
On Friday, January 7, the Butler Bulldogs stunned the Cleveland State Vikings at Hinkle Field house. This game left the Bulldogs with a share of second place in the conference and provided the only loss for the Vikings.
January 4, Milwaukee crushed Butler in an amazing victory, beating them by 24 points. Milwaukee is one of the worst teams in the Horizon Conference, Butler should have been able to beat them with ease. With Butler losing to one of the worst teams in the Horizon Conference, you would think that Cleveland State would crush the Bulldogs, the opposite soon turned up.
Not even 5 minutes into the game, the Bulldogs jumped on the Vikings, to get a six point lead. Cleveland State could not guard Butler, and Butler worked a zone on Cleveland State. “I thought we did a really nice job of defending as a team and attacking as a team. You have to handle their initial wave in order to attack them appropriately, and I thought our guards did a great job of that and our bigs did a great job of finishing.” As the first half ended, 42-23 was the score, with Butler in the lead.
Sophomore Andrew Smith came out with an aggressive attitude in the second half, he scored 17 of his 22 points, and grabbed 6 of his 10 rebounds, all in the second half. “(Cleveland State’s) bigs helped out a lot and our guards did a really good job of penetrating, and they got me the ball a lot. I was able to get some offensive rebounds and make some shots,” commented Smith, after the game. Vikings senior, Norris Cole led the team with 26 points and 10 rebounds. He had the most points in the game, but missed some free throws. Cole had little help from his teammates.
The game finished with a Bulldog victory, 79-56. Cleveland State never got within 17 points of Butler in the last 20 minutes and Butler never led by less than 20 points in the final ten minutes of the game.
The Butler Bulldogs proved they worked hard to win the game, but the Cleveland State Vikings showed that they were not ready to win the game.
Butler Blowout
Butler perpetrated a 20-point blowout against Cleveland State on Friday for the entire game. Butler made the first point, scored by Senior Matt Howard, and they stayed strong throughout the game. The first quarter looked bad for Cleveland State as Butler scored most of the points. By halftime, Butler was leading 42-23. Sophomore, Andrew Smith, made his first appearance against Cleveland State in his college basketball career and made the most of it. This win helped boost the Bulldogs into a four-way tie for second place in the Horizon League.
“(Cleveland State’s) bigs helped off a lot and our guards did a really good job of penetrating, and they got me the ball a lot,” said Smith, who led the Bulldogs in scoring for the first time in his young career. “I was able to get some offensive rebounds and make some shots.” After coming from a loss earlier in the week to Milwaukee, Butler blew a little time jumping in the number one team in the conference. The bulldogs managed to blow off 6 points to make an eight-point lead during the beginning of the game.
Butler’s starting guard, Zach Hahn, was sidelined with the flu at the time of the game, but that didn’t stop Butler to win. “I thought we did a really nice job of defending as a team and attacking as a team,” said Butler head coach Brad Stevens. “You have to handle their initial wave in order to attack them appropriately, and I thought our guards did a great job of that and our bigs did a great job of finishing.” In the final 20 minutes Butler held Cleveland State to a point where Cleveland State was never closer than 17 points away from Butler. Although Cleveland State played terribly and lost really badly, they knew it would be a hard team to win against.
Cleveland State Surprised
On Friday January 7, the Butler Bulldogs came out and gave Cleveland State a surprising game, defeating them 79-56. Butler hosted the game at Hinkle Field House, in Indianapolis. Fans from all over, filled the arena for what they hoped would be a good game. The full student section, filled with lots of confidence and school spirit, showed how supporting the attending students.
A Butler Sophomore, Andrew Smith, surprised everyone through out the game because of how well he played. He scored the most points he has ever scored in his career and the most any of the players had in the game, scoring 22 points. Matt Howard, also a senior from Butler, scored 17 points. They were the top scorers for Butler in the game. “Cleveland State’s bigs helped off a lot and our guards did a really good job of penetrating, and they got me the ball a lot. I was able to get some offensive rebounds and make some shots”, said Smith.
Butler went into the game with really good energy and later on you could tell that it payed off. Being aggressive and quick was a big part of this game. It was easy to see how hard all of the players worked, weather they played good or bad.
“I thought we did a really nice job of defending as a team and attacking as a team. You have to handle their initial wave in order to attack them appropriately and I thought our guards did a great job of that and our bigs did a great job of finishing,” said Butler’s coach Brad Stevens. Cleveland State looked pretty disappointed after the losing.
After losing to Milwaukee, many people knew Butler would come ready to play. They used the energy from losing to Milwaukee to help them win this game. Cleveland State’s Coach Gary Waters said, “I have to give Butler all the credit tonight. They came ready to play and they whooped our butt. They took it to us from the start and got us out of our flow on offense and defense.”
Butler Wins Another Big One At Home
On Friday night at Hinkle Field House, The Butler Bulldogs tore up the Cleveland State Vikings' offense. The Vikings didn't know what hit them. The championship team is back and hungry for more. In the first 10 minutes of the game Butler forced Cleveland State to turn the ball over 8 times. Letting Butler go on a 16-2 run to take control of the game early. The first 10 minutes were the worst start to a game Cleveland State has had all year.
“I have to give Butler all the credit tonight.” Vikings' Coach Gary Waters said. They came ready to play and they whooped our butt. They took it to us from the start and got us out of our flow on offense and defense. The score when 21-4 when finally The Vikings realize that they are playing basketball. Tim Kamczyc of Cleveland State hits a 3 to end The Vikings' Drought. Then a little later the vikings get 6 quick points including and NBA 3 by Norris Cole to make it 26-13. Halftime score is 42-23. Everyone is thinking that Cleveland State just had a bad start. They will realize they need to put there mind to it and pull this game out.
But second half comes around and the 19 point lead is too much to come back from. The Vikings' shooting was not helping anything. Only 9 for 25 from the field the first half. The Bulldogs kept there 20 point lead most of the second half. Norris Cole was the man keeping them alive the whole game. He had 26 points and 10 rebounds. But a one man show does not get you anywhere. The Vikings hung with them most of them the rest of the game but that first 10 minutes of the game threw the team off. This is uncharacteristic of The Vikings to start the game bad. Butler came out and took it to them there is not much more you can say. Final score Butler 79, Cleveland state 56.
Cleveland State Upset
Last Friday, Cleveland State was upset by Butler University in a game that defied all predictions, a blowout where a nail-biter was foretold. The Bulldogs were leading from the beginning, with sophomore Andrew Smith at the helm, scoring most of the team’s final 79 points, in addition to a career high of 22 points.
Cleveland was coming off a streak of 15 wins interrupted by a single loss. Butler came off of a 24-point loss at Milwaukee. Both were given nearly equal chances from the beginning, although Butler was admittedly favored...but just a bit.
Cleveland coach Gary Waters said after the game that “I am disappointed. I knew they were going to come ready to play...I thought we would answer their emotion.” Many seemed to share this sentiment, with several fans lamenting the lack of excitement in the game. It seemed that from the first half, Cleveland had given up, and Butler was sinking basket after basket against them. However, the fans on the Butler side were enthusiastic as ever, with many standing up promptly as soon as their team dared to cross the half court line. I suppose, when one is an extremely fervent fan, one feels no remorse. And if one does, one would tamp it down.
“I thought we did a really nice job of defending as a team and attacking as a team,” said Butler head coach Brad Stevens of his team’s performance after the game. “You have to handle their initial wave in order to attack them appropriately.”
The Bulldogs did that and more as they cleaned out Cleveland State. Though it was not exciting for very long, this was a very important game, and may well be remembered by many people, Butler and Cleveland State fans alike, although maybe Butler with relatively more fondness, for years to come.
Butler Wins an Intense Game
Butler also looked way more comfortable playing on their home court. You could tell that the players were way more intense. The players had a tough time guarding Cole at first but in the second half they made a good adjustment and he always had a man in his face. Most fans came to the game expecting a close and even match up but that's not what they got. It was supposed to be a very close game Butler held the lead the whole time and ended up winning by more than 20 points. Predictions of the game clearly did not match up with the final results.
Before Friday nights game against Cleveland St. Butler record was 10-5 and Cleveland State was 14-2, both teams came into the game with an equally respectable record. No one knew which team was going to win. But the Bulldogs came through and wowed Cleveland St. “I thought we did a really nice job of defending as a team and attacking as a team,” said Stevens, “You have to handle their initial wave in order to attack them appropriately, and I thought our guards did a great job of that and our bigs did a great job of finishing.” He also noted that “Butler won’t have much time to savor the victory over Cleveland State. The Bulldogs will be back in action at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Sunday, Jan. 9, against Youngstown State. That contest is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Goshen Gets Punched
“They punched us in the face and we took it,” said coach Gary Chupp after a miserable loss for the Goshen Maple leafs on Tuesday night. “In basketball you are going to have nights like this...” The Goshen Maple leafs had a shocking loss verses the Bethel pilots.
The game started by both teams coming out with lots of energy. Both teams came out, carrying much aggression for the ball. “We had a lot of players contribute on offense. Everybody that played scored.” As the buzzer rang at the end of the first half, the score showed how intense the game was. The score was, 34-35 with the Pilots ahead by one point. Goshen was running out of steam.
When both teams started warming up for the second half, they looked rested, ready to play another competitive half. As it was soon obvious, one team was rested, the other was not. Shot after shot, Bethel sank while Goshen couldn’t hit any of their shots. After about 8 minutes, the run was 19-2. Finally, the run ended and the game continued. The final buzzer rang and the ending score was 54-70.
“One of the things we have got to learn is how to manufacture energy on nights when we arre not shooting well. Good teams learn how to do that. We will show the players the film from the start of the second half and hopefully they will figure it out,” quoted by Gary Chupp, the GC coach. The loss was shocking, but one team had to win. The way that Goshen got punched, was shocking.
Bethel Beats Goshen to First Conference Win
Arch-rivals Goshen and Bethel battled for victory last night, both vying for their first win in their conference. Bethel won 70-54 after Goshen crumbled in the second half. Goshen came into the game after winning twice over Christmas Break, probably feeling fairly good. Bethel came with a 10-7 record, having won the last game. These two teams are long-time rivals, with each game well-attended, and awash in blue and purple. Many people come out just once a year, for this game.
The beginning of the game started out looking good for Goshen. Dunks, 3-pointers, and lay-ups galore quickly populated the scoreboard. Bethel was not without score, though. They had Goshen by the tail for the first 20 minutes, and then, after halftime, went on a 19-point run, well on their way to double-digit victory.
Bethel was pushing Goshen to the three point line the whole 2nd half. Before the intermission, Goshen had been making tons of layups, but afterwards, Bethel’s defense allowed no room for close shots. It looked close, but then Bethel dominated, and many Goshen fans were unhappy with their team’s performance.
Not Getting Easier
“It doesn’t get any easier in the MCC” Said Goshen College’s coach after his team suffered a shocking loss to Bethel. The score was a shocking 56-70 and in eight minutes Bethel scored nineteen points and Goshen only scored two.
In the MCC or the Mid Central Conference there is a lot of competition Goshen is at the bottom of the list on the MCC tournament. There are nine teams in this conference. Goshen has a lot of competition in this for them. This means they really need to step up there game and not get kicked in the butt again. As said by Goshen’s coach.
As this game there were quite a few blocks and turnovers Goshen only hit 4 out of 28 shots from the three point line. “We just need to keep at it, be confident, and build some momentum” Goshens Coach Gary Chupp said.
In the first half of the game Goshen had a strong lead. Bethel was playing poorly. Bethel was letting them cut right into to lane and score a lot of two pointers. But in the second half Bethel stepped up their defence in the second half and their offence too. They started getting more and more points as the seconds were ticking in the second half.
Goshens coach later explained “I wasn’t please on how we approached the second half, Bethel came out with more intensity and kicked our butts and we took it."
Disappointing Effort
“What really disappointed me was our effort in the start of the second half,” Gary Chupp, Goshen’s basketball coach, states after Goshen lost, by 16 points, to Bethel. The beginning of the second half Bethel outscored Goshen by 17 points in the first 8 minutes. Goshen was in the lead most of the time in the first half, but then Bethel found that Goshen’s strategy was to get most points from making layups. So Bethel forced them to shoot outside the three point arc. The Goshen players lost their groove at the beginning of the second half. None of their shots were making it in the hoop. The Maple Leaf’s best shooter was not shooting well at all this game. Every player that Bethel’s coach put in to play scored at least one point. Bethel’s defense also was stepping up their game to keep them out of the three point arc. Although Goshen never stopped moving and passing the ball to one another, Bethel stopped them from shooting before the shot clock would run out. In the first half Goshen was spot on in running down to the other half of the court before Bethel could get there first, to make layup after layup after layup. During halftime, Bethel must have talked about how Goshen was making more layups than other shots, so Bethel decided they would stop them from shooting layups. In the second quarter Bethel succeeded in stopping the layups and proceeded to win the whole game.
Maple Leafs Shooting Less Than Wonderful
Last night, Bethel College realized that Goshen was aiming to make layups and forced them instead to shoot outside the three point arc. This strategy crippled the cold shooting Maple Leafs and led Bethel to a crucial conference win. The first half of the game went reasonably well for Goshen, a highlight being Carl Steen’s dunk at the beginning of the game. The crowd went wild and expected more excitement to come. Both teams shot a lot of free throws. Spectators watched Goshen make layup after layup. The first half ended with the Pilots in a tentative lead of 35-34.
Bethel had obviously caught on to Goshen’s strategy of scoring most of their points inside the three point arc. They stepped up their defense and pushed them outside, restricting their shots to be farther and farther away. Bethel’s tactics worked, and helped keep their shots to be field goals only. “The run to start the second half was huge,” says Bethel’s coach, Mike Lightfoot, “We talked about some key things at halftime and this was one of the first times all season the players stayed with the focus. It’s a sign that we are growing up a little bit.” Goshen’s coach, Gary Chupp, commented that, “We shot the ball terribly. But I can live with that. In basketball you are going to have nights like this. What really disappointed me was our effort in the start of the second half.” The game ended with a loss for Goshen at 54-70.
Bethel's Team Energy Pays Off
In the game last night the Bethel and Goshen players played very hard and worked well together. At the start of the second half Goshen ran out of gas, and fell far behind on a 19-2 run and were never able to catch back up. After the game, Bethel’s coach, Mike Lightfoot, said, “We had a lot of players contribute on offense. Everybody that played scored. We needed that because Caleb Laidig (the leading scorer for Bethel) is battling the flu.” At the beginning of the game nobody was sure how the game would end up because both teams started the game playing with the same energy. Goshen player Carl Steen started off the game well with a great dunk. He is a 6’4” Senior with plenty of experience. None of the players were ever just standing or waiting around. They were always moving to get open. The first half of the game was a lot more intense because the score was much closer. The fans were very intent on watching the game and cheered loud for their teams. The coaches were very into the game as well. The coach of Goshen College, Gary Chupp, got a technical foul after getting mad at the referees and going out on the court. Later on after the game, Gary mentioned, “One of the things we have got to learn is how to manufacture energy on nights when we are not shooting well. Good teams learn how to do that. We will show the players the film from the start of the second half and hopefully they will figure it out”. The game was very tough and physical. Bethel gave good effort and it payed off in the end.
Guarding the Hoop
During the Goshen College/Bethel College Basketball game Bethel won 70-54 by realizing that Goshen would only attempt layups and short shots. Bethel decided they would guard the middle and the hoop so it would make Goshen shoot. This plan worked out well because shooting is definitely not Goshen’s strong suit. Bethel did not start putting their plan to use until the beginning of the second half. Which makes sense because in the first half if someone was ahead is was only by one or two points.
After seeing Goshen be controlled by Bethel I feel that Goshen needs to work on slowing down and thinking. Or maybe they just need to not be so influenced by their opponents and practice their shots when another game like this comes along they will be prepared. It is also unusual to see Seth Kaufman not play at the same level of the other players, but it is not his fault since this is his first year of playing college basketball. Goshen does not deserve all the blame for losing though, the refereeing was and has not been the best in college basketball. Fan Matt Miller comments saying,”Yes, the refereeing for college ball is terrible. Not only are they bad now but i remember when i kept stats for college basketball when I was in college they were just as bad. They just aren’t very consistent.”
All that I’ve said comes from conversations and discussions I had with other fans such as Matt Miller and my own viewings of the game playing. As the season goes on I am predicting that Goshen will eventually learn from their mistakes and get the hang of the game. It may take one practice or maybe one more game, but eventually it will happen.

Bethel Gains Momentum
By Carl Steen stealing the ball and slam dunking it, the momentum was with Goshen for the next few minutes, but they were broken by the half time break as Bethel came out of the locker room with a 19-2 run. In the first half Goshen and Bethel were even with only a two or three point difference and Goshen leading for most of the half. Except for the bad overall shooting night, the momentum was in favor of Goshen early. The Maple Leafs hit three straight field goals, including a 3-pointer by Jeremy Pope as they got an early 9-5 lead three and a half minutes into the match. But when Goshen came out of the locker room after the first half, the momentum was not with them for the rest of the game. Bethel went on a 19-2 run with Goshen only scoring six points. During the 19-2 Bethel run, almost all of Goshen’s shots seemed to rim out while most of Bethel’s shots fell to the bottom of the net. The Maple Leafs struggled to get on a roll, hitting just 31% from the field for the night. This tough conference win could also be the start of Bethel winning other conference games because this win gave them momentum and confidence, just like their 19-2 run in the second half. “I wasn’t pleased with how we approached the start of the second half,” Goshen Coach Gary Chupp explained. “They came out with a lot more intensity and urgency and made us pay for it.”
Goshen v. Bethel
Because of Bethels amazing defense Goshen shot 25% from the field in the second half of Tuesdays Conference game at the Gunden center. Goshen stars Jeremy Pope and Matthew Martin combined to shoot 6-33 making almost no shots in the second half.
Goshen started of the game making it very close and making most of there shots. Three pointers were a very big impact in the game. Goshen shot 2-14 in each half. On top of the bad overall three point shooting Goshens top two players shot nineteen threes and made just two.
Bethel came into the second half playing okay defense in the first half but were going to try and play harder, they defiantly did what they wanted. They started of by going on a 19-2 run. That put them up in the game 49-36.
The second half started with the bleachers packed and a very close game. Kyle Davies led the team very well through the first half with six points and rebounds each. He was hoping to come out in the second half and do the same. It might have looked liked he didn't because of the final score, but he actually still had five points and rebounds. Kyle also rebounded his own shot twice and had two keys steals that helped them in the first half when they looked like they were going to fall apart. I think Kyle was the MVP of the game, but you could of given it to Joe Welch who had 10 points and 9 rebounds, also 8 of those points and 7 rebounds came in the second half, which I thought should easily beat Davies, but he still had four fouls in that half. Landon Booker also had 5 key steals to and three of them came in the second half during there 19-2 run.
Goshen played a well fought game through the first half but couldn't compete with the strength of bethels bench, defense and endurance that made bethel dominate the first ten minutes of the second half.
Goshen Has Hard Time
Goshen College men’s basketball team played with Bethel college at Gunden Gymnasium in Goshen College yesterday. Goshen was ahead most of the first half, but Bethel was ahead in second half.
There are some causes why Goshen did not do well in second half. Goshen’s two top leading players, Jeremy Pope and Matthew Martin, did not play well. They did not make lots of scores. Goshen shot 33 shots but they only made 6 of those. That is not good for them. The reason why Goshen was pretty much ahead in first half was Bethel was pretty much defensive. So Goshen could pressure on them, but in second half, Bethel changed their strategy to offensive. After they change it Bethel had a lot of stealings and Goshen could not follow them. For the other reason why Goshen did not do well is their the other good player, Austin Hefley who has third high points in the team, did not play yesterday game. I think the cheering effected a lot for the game too. Bethel cheered their team a lot, but I could not see Goshen player’s cheering.
Goshen had some hard times in second half. They turned over the ball a lot and Bethel scored a lot because of their stealing. Bethel scored a lot in second half but Goshen could not. So Bethel had much momentum on second half and Goshen did not have a lot of energy left.
Therefore, Goshen college had some hard times in second half and there are some reasons.
Bethel v. Goshen
scored Bethel their first win and left Goshen in the dust. During the game in Gunden gymnasium at 7:00 pm.,the game began with number #21 Carl Steen having a breakaway steal to go up for a dunk. After that Goshen followed up with several lay ups and kept them coming throughout the half. But Bethel followed up also shooting lay ups and short range shots. The game became even more intense each minute passing by, Goshen would score then Bethel would score and tie the game. By the ninth minute the score was 17 to 18 with Bethel leading the game. This game became a high energy and aggressive, but the referees were making bad calls every time the players tried to be aggressive with the other players. As the game was approaching half time the game was getting more and more intense, and soon half time came. The teams went in and kept the fans anticipating what the second had to come. When both teams came out the second half started of with Bethel holding back and concentrating on defense. They decided since Goshen was getting all of their shots from making layups and close range shots, Bethel cut off Goshen from getting short range shots and made them take far shots like three pointers. They tried it and it worked and Goshen kept missing the three point shots, horribly and ended up going 2/14 on three point shots. As Goshen’s three point shooting seemed to be getting worse, Bethel kept getting breakaways from Goshen and going up to shoot giving Bethel a relaxed lead by the fourth minute. As the game continued it seemed as all hope was lost for Goshen because Bethel had the game under their control. And to make matters worse the coach of Goshen received a technical foul for complaining about a call that was made. But then Mathew Martin from Goshen started the game again by making 1 of his 2 free throws and kept Goshen in the game by starting to come back. But Bethel did the same at the eight minute mark it was 44-58 but as the came to an end Bethel stayed strong and came out with the win 54-70 giving them a record of 1 and 3. But on the losing side things were different and Goshen was still left win less with a record of 0 and 3.
Bethel Comes and Swipes Away Goshen's Win
Goshen's top scorer Matthew Martin failed to lead his team to victory, going 5 for 21 from the field despite being at his home court. Even though the Leafs had home field advantage they went 21 for 68 from the field and Bethel went 27 for 55 and 13 for 26 in the second half.
Goshen had 10 turnovers and got out rebounded 16 to 22.Goshen also shot the ball terribly the second half by going 7 for 28, that is shooting just 25%! Bethel then gained momentum by building up their lead and just couldn’t be stopped by Goshen College.
Bethel and Goshen have both been win less in their conference so that made this game very crucial because who ever lost would surely be in last place. Also Bethel and Goshen are big rivals which made both teams come out with outstanding intensity.
Bethel has swept Goshen off their feet for the past two game, and last time Goshen still playing the same game, they went 27 for 69 from the field, 39 % better then this year. Even with Errick McCollums 24 points could not lead Goshen to a victory.
The next step for Goshen is to keep their intensity going throughout the second half and be able to complete their plays. They need 1 player to step up and lead the team when their down, to bring them back in the game and build up their confidence so they can play better.
Goshen Defeated By Bethel
half playing really well. The first shot of the game was when Martin Matthew (Goshen) tried a layup and missed but Nate Manning (goshen) came up and dunked it, it wasn't in tended for a dunk at all.
Let's talk about how Goshen didn't play good at all during the second half. Goshen was shooting really bad they only made 2 threes. Bethel's defense wasn't that great but they managed to hold off Goshen and win 70 - 54.
Goshen also had a lot of fouls 12 for the game, which gave Bethel most of there points. The Goshen coach got a tactical foul because the refs made a bad call and the coach was mad and started yelling at the ref. The college refs are worse then high-school refs.
During the first 5 minutes of the game number 30, Nate Manning goes diving for a ball. He gets the ball back in to his teammates but slides in to the Gatorade cart almost knocking it over. At the beginning of the second half Bethel had 19 -2 run for most of the second half.
Both these teams are in a conference and Goshen was 0-2 and Bethel was 0-3. After last nights game Bethel's now 1-3. Goshen is 0-3. They have been rivals since the early 50s and are still rivals today.
Goshen now plays the national anthem before every sporting event. The president of the council meeting had made the decision to play it. After the National anthem is played its followed by prayer. I noticed only one player on the court who put his hand up to his heart that was Seth Kauffman number 33 for Goshen college.Goshen College was defeated in the end 54-70 but Goshen played bad and are playing better, hopefully they will play better next time.
Goshen v. Bethel
This is Tuesday at Goshen high school. The Goshen team was shooting a lot of 3s and they only made 4 out of 28!! Goshen can not hold on the the ball at all. They can't complete drives. They are doing good passes. Bethel finished all there drives and every time they get the ball they score. Bethel not missing any shoots. Bethel is out rebounding Goshen, out shooting out doing everything in all the single categories. it is the second half and we are down by 14. I think we can come back. There was so many fouls in this game today. There was a technical foul on number 3 for Goshen and Bethel mad both so now we are done by 16.The game was very intense the was a lot of passing, steals, and lots of running with good ball handling. It is getting close to the end of the game we are still down. There is two minuets left.we are falling back farther. It seems like Goshen is falling apart. The is 10 sec left. people start saying good job and high-fiving. Goshen lost to Bethel. The final score was 54 to 70. Other then Goshen lost they had a good 1st half. And not so good in the second half. Bethel had a very good game well that is what i thought they worked together as a team. Goshen had a number 35 and he was kinda a ball hog and just shoot a lot and did not make any.
Big Run Fuels Bethel Win
After a leading by the small margin of 35-34 in the first half, Bethel College's 19-2 second half run gave them the win over rival Goshen College in a full Gunden Gymnasium. This win came on Tuesday night with the Pilots winning by a final score of 70-54.
During the decisive run it seemed like every shot attempted by Goshen College had no chance of falling and like Bethel College just couldn’t miss and every shot they took found the bottom of the net. This 19-2 run was made possible by Bethel just plain outdoing Goshen in pretty category including rebounding, defense, shooting and many other things.
Similar to how the run gave them confidence during the game this win, being their fist in the conference, could give them confidence in competing better and possibly winning more games in their conference.
Neither Goshen College or Bethel College had a win in the MCC (Mid Central Conference) prior to this game. So whoever lost this game would be winless and last place. Bethel’s win allowed them to pass Goshen College putting the Maple Leafs in last place, and the Pilots in second to last place.
“The run to start the second half was huge,” said Bethel coach Mike Lightfoot, ”We talked about some key things at halftime and this was one of the first times all season the players stayed with the focus. It’s a sign we are growing up a little bit.” Clearly Lightfoot was happy with the way his team played, unlike Goshen College coach Gary Chupp who said, “they punched us in the face and we took it.”
Goshen College Plays National Anthem
In the game of Goshen College and Bethel everything felt different. Goshen College has never played the National Anthem. Since the first sport that Goshen College had, they never played it. From January 22, 2010, Goshen College started to play the National Anthem for softball and baseball games. Later in the spring the National Anthem sprung into all the other sports that Goshen College had.
When the buzzer yelled a loud voice said, “Please rise for the National Anthem.” Everyone was silent and the music started to play. Almost everyone was looking up at the red, blue, and white flag. But almost no Goshen fan put their hand on their heart. Goshen College’s fans were not used to the National Anthem playing at Goshen College’s games. On Goshen College’s actual basketball team only one person put his hand on his heart. Number 33, Seth Kaufman, put his hand on his heart while it played.
There are two reasons why Goshen College plays the National Anthem now. The first reason is that two Goshen College Presidents, Dr. Kathy Meyer Reimer and Dr. Joe Liechty decided that they want to play it because it honors traditions. The second reason is that they want to hold and play in conference games. Division two, the NAIA, made the rule that you have to play the National Anthem to play in conference games.
The presidents of Goshen College feel that it’s right to play it. Dr. Joe Liechty quotes, “This is the right thing to do and we will keep it for a while.”

Lacking Something in the Spirit Department
The pickup 3-on-3 boys basketball game today at Bethany Christian Middle School was fast-paced, if a bit lacking in excitement. Heads turned while watching the ball take it's exciting journey: first it's Tristan Clark's, then Sol Brenneman, then on to Mr. Miller for it's final journey beyond the 3 point line to swish through the hoop. Unfortunately, few in the stands were excited, as the all-female audience glimpsed the determinedly stoic looks on the faces of their male counterparts.
Giggles from the stands punctuated the silence as the girls regarded the sometimes comic attempts by the players to show off. First, there was Landon Weldy, with his attempt to fake a pass that trailed off into the weeds. Then there was Sol Brenneman, shooting with all manner of behind the back, sidearm, maniac jump shots, only one of which made the hoop. There was also Tristan Clark, trying and failing to shoot over the defense of Weldy. Finally, there was Mr. Miller, passing with one hand and jumping to kingdom come. Miller did, however, have an impressive 3-pointer later in the game.
Though maybe lacking something in the spirit department, this game of 3-on-3 was interesting at times. One of the teams won by half the other's score, but due to the lack of enthusiasm, no one can seem to remember who.
A Game to Remember?
Monday afternoon there was a BCMS 3-on-3 girls basketball game. The teams were Erin, Syd, Lena and Cheyenne vs. Mallory, Jordan, and Abbi. It was a game to remember.
Abbi and Erin guarded each other tight. There is a rivalry between them and they were pretty rough on each other throughout the game.
The game was close until the end because Mallory was on fire! She didn't miss, collecting all of her team's 8 points and most of their rebounds, crashing the boards and boxing out on almost every shot. Her 4 rebounds also led the team. For the other team, Cheyenne was playing well. She hit a shot from back near the free throw line with Mallory's hand right in her face.
Abbi had several blocks on Erin, but Erin finally put one in at the end. The officials of the game were doing well with the fouls in this physical game, but missed many travels. The game might have ended up the other way if they were called.
In an interview after the game, Mallory was asked how it felt to be the leading scorer on the winning team. She answered, "It felt great!" The final score was 8-4, with Mallory's team coming away with another big win.

3-on-3 Gets Intense
Addi, Hans and Tylor and Ethan, Nahshon, and Jesse played each other in an intense 3-on-3 basketball game. It was very physical as both teams wanted the win, with many fouls happening in only an 8 minute game. Plus, within 5 seconds of the start of the game, both Tylor and Nahshon were on the ground.
This was a very close game as both teams clearly hadn't played for a while. There were many airballs and shots that had no chance of falling. So the leading scorers for both teams, Addi and Ethan, only came out with 4 points each. This kept the game close with the lead not exceeding 2 points until the very end of the game when Nahshon had a two point free throw opportunity with 30 seconds left to increase his team's lead to four. This ultimately made the win for Addi's team nearly impossible with all of the poor shooting and the small amount of time left in the game.
Nahshon's made free throw made the score 8-4 and Nahshon got high fives from his teammates as they now secured the win. After the buzzer sounded, the teams exchanged smiles and handshakes showing that there were no hard feelings and they were all still friends in the end. This might have been an intense game but it was just a 3-on-3 game that means nothing out of the moment.
But who knows, that winning team may move on to the U-14 3-on-3 tournament and win!
What is Sports Journalism?
ESPN SportsCenter is a shining example of sports journalism. The anchors on the live program show many ways to detail the happenings of the sports world, including interviews, comments from the main desk, and slow-motion play-by-plays, complete with arrows which point out where a player is headed next and why.
SportsCenter sports coverage can be placed in several categories: interview, playback, and discussion. In the first category, anchors or reporters ask questions directly to players and coaches, either at a press conference or up close and personal. These questions span all sorts of categories, from "Why did you make that pass?" to "So, will this be the last time you retire?" Such questions are designed to let the sports fan at home catch up with their favorite player.
The second category includes game footage, both live and recorded. As this is going on, the anchors may comment on how play is proceeding, or stop the tape and draw arrows to highlight certain moves or plays.
The third and final category is just plain talk. The anchor may sit at their desk and discuss the chances of a certain team to make the finals, or they may just comment on a team's general performance.
While very different, all of these journalistic methods are meant to uncover deeper aspects of the sport.
MVP of the 3-on-3
Just yesterday, there was a game of 3-on-3 basketball played in the Bethany Christian Middle School gymnasium. The first team consisted of Trent Yoder, Cristian Romero, and Young Kwan Sun. The second team's players were Tanner Fervida, Isaac Brenneman and Christian Ramirez. Team 1 kept a steady lead by six points for the majority of the game, as is shown by the final score of 19-14.
If there had to be an MVP for this single game, it would be Tanner Fervida. This is because by himself he scored every single point for his team. Not only did he score all of the points, but 12 of those points were shot from behind the three point line and only one was a two point basket.
Although Tanner played very well, he could not have done it all on his own. He had many helpful passes from Isaac Brenneman. But not as many from his other teammate, Christian. The reason for this is most likely attributed to what Christian said, "This is my first time playing in a real basketball game. The only other time I've played some was at some practices in elementary school."
So once again, if there was an MVP for this particular game, it would be Tanner Fervida. But not far behind him would be Cristian Romero. There are numerous reasons for this estimate. To start, Cristian scored a total of 13 of his team's 19 points. That's not far off Fervida's 14. Also, Cristian had some very tricky and entertaining passes to his teammates. Cristian was the only person to stuff someone as well. Despite Cristian's talents, his teammate Trent Yoder ended up with 4 points and Young Kwan Sun finished with 2.
What Sports Are Being Covered Now?
by Isaac Brenneman
At this time of year the only big thing on SportsCenter in NFL football. It is only football because that is the main sport that is in season right now, and the playoffs are coming up soon. The only other sport that we saw was professional basketball, and it was only for about 5 minutes.
Another reason that there was so much football on was because it was the morning after a Sunday, and all of the football games are played on Sunday. At this time of year, especially on Monday mornings, it is not very hard to decide what to show on SportsCenter. Football.
They should not show as much football because it gets old watching the same thing over and over again. There was also a little college basketball shown, but not very much because there were not very many games played over the weekend. As far as professional basketball, the only thing they showed was the Lakers getting beat by the last place Grizzlies. They also put on big upsets, like the Lakers getting beat by the last place Grizzlies.
Yet, the content that ruled this Monday was simply football.
